The vice-presidential debate shouldn’t have been shocking for its cordiality but the Midwestern good-naturedness bordering on camaraderie was nothing short of stunning in our current political climate. It was a welcome reprieve from Trump’s signature vitriol.

In the roll-up-your-plaid-flannel-sleeves battle for America, Tim Walz and JD Vance seem to be trying their gosh-darned hardest to out-heartland one another. Are their campaigns prioritizing working- and middle-class white Americans with folksy outreach? Could a casserole recipe possibly turn a Trump voter into a Harris voter?

In modern America, donating to campaigns has arguably become the most effective way to vote. And during this campaign, in which the American vice-presidential candidates compete to out-Americana each other, if you donate to the Harris Victory Fund, you’ll receive Governor Tim Walz’s “family hot dish” recipe.

“I lived in Minnesota — trust me, this dish has tater tots in it,” a friend laughed in our group chat. She wasn’t wrong. The next fundraising ad to cross my newsfeed was a casserole dish lined with tater tots. And the call-to-action wasn’t just to donate, it was to donate weekly.
