Yes, when we commodify pieces of “other” culture — Halloween costumes, fashion, music, lexicon, food, etc — surgically extracting the “cool” stuff we like and disregarding the whole it’s like looting. This was the exact truth-hurts brilliance of Get Out and why my mouth was hanging open for probably the entire second half of the movie. We literally consume what we like/want with no regard for the rest.

An explanation of cultural appropriation that burst my bubble was, to badly paraphrase, when a majority culture adopts and c̶e̶l̶e̶b̶r̶a̶t̶e̶s commodifies something it has previously mocked and marginalized (or worse) in a minority culture, like dreadlocks.

And I don’t quite know how to respond to the very prevalent problem of white “endorsement” of phenomena and issues. I’m still trying to find a balance between speaking up/out and using my privilege for good without talking over/down to people who can speak for themselves. I need to find ways to be a metaphorical backup singer.
