I agree. Many, (most?) politicians recoil from any honesty that isn’t self-serving. That’s why we have so many jokes about them as liars.

And I don’t know what’s in this man’s heart. Maybe, despite his racist and sexist statements and callously unpresidential mockery, he secretly believes in equality.

True, the left and the right both beat their drums to sell their own media but they do not invent quotes. Trump speaks for himself. And then the media outlets respond to his statements and tweets.

He is quoted by Fox news here as saying that Mexicans are rapists in one of his first notoriously racist public statements. Fox news also quoted him disrespecting a Muslim and military Gold Star Family simultaneously in another notorious statement from the campaign trail. They editorialize those incidents differently than the left but the fact remains that he made those statements.

If he can dish out “brutally honest” statements about what happens beyond our borders he should encourage brutally honest analysis and criticism of those statements and his policies within our borders — whether he agrees with his critics or not.
