I’m so sorry for what you’ve been through, and from such a young age. Thank you for sharing your story. And I hope Dom is ok too.
I’m not famous and I certainly don’t have the platform that Ashley Judd and Alyssa Milano do. But I wrote this after one of my best friends and I, both white girls from Oregon, spent hours on the phone enraged about all the details that no one cared about back when he married a 14-year-old girl.
The apathy for an unrepentant pedophile has been pissing me off since the 90s. And as many people have pointed out, those in R. Kelly’s circle who did nothing are also guilty.
But you’re absolutely right. The silence is deafening. I’ve written a lot about Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Louis C.K., George Bush Sr. and a rape trial in Ireland. Those all generated much more views and interaction than writing about R. Kelly, whose predatory deviance has been well known for decades. It’s not like we just discovered what a sick bastard he is.
We need famous white women to be allies with outrage for all victims. I hope one non-famous white voice from a small town helps.
